What a useful estimate contains

scope + task time + rates + discount + tax + total = reviewable estimate

A professional estimate explains the scope and assumptions behind the price. It is not an invoice and should be reviewed before it is used as a binding commercial or tax document.

Freelance estimate example

Website landing page: discovery, wireframe, visual design, responsive implementation and one revision round. Each line shows its time and rate. The client can see what is included and which extra work would require a revised estimate.

How to create a client estimate

01

Name the client and project

Use a recognisable project title so the PDF can be found and discussed later.

02

Describe the scope

Create one line per deliverable. Avoid vague labels such as ‘general work’ when a clearer task name is available.

03

Check and send

Review time, rates, currency, discount and tax, then print to PDF or share the summary through your preferred channel.

FAQ

Freelance estimate questions

Is an estimate the same as an invoice?

No. An estimate describes expected scope and price before final billing. It is not a tax invoice.

Can I save the estimate as PDF?

Yes. Use the print action and choose Save as PDF in the browser print dialog.

Can I show complimentary work?

Yes. Mark a task as complimentary so its value is visible while its price remains zero.
